I found an interesting post this week: Are Doctors Really “Lecturing” Patients About Weight?
According to this post and a study by the Mayo Clinic, only 20% of patients who are obese are diagnosed as such by their physicians. Unfortunately, this comes as no surprise to me. The first doctor to point out to me that I was technically considered to be obese was my husband, unfortunately. I clearly knew that I was overweight, but had no idea I was technically obese. I could still buy all of my clothes at the Gap and Ann Taylor Loft and I’ve never had to buy plus sized clothes. So, I was pretty surprised to learn I was obese. Check out a BMI calculator to determine if you might be overweight tor obese, though of course the calculator won’t account for those who are particularly athletic and muscular.
I started seeing a new family practice doctor for the first time back in December. He was the first doctor I’ve seen who actually pointed out to me that I needed to try to lose weight, and recommended I shoot for 5 pounds per month. For some reason hearing him come out and say that I needed to lose some weight (I don’t think he ever actually said overweight or obese), and giving me a goal of 5 pounds per month, motivated me to try. Maybe because I didn’t want to have to answer to him when I saw him again. When I went back to see him last week, he told me that I had lost 12 pounds. So, nowhere near the 30 pounds I should have lost based on 5 pounds per month, but, he was happy with it nonetheless, as am I. I actually lost 10 of those pounds in December and January and have managed to keep it off this long, so I count that as an accomplishment. Plus, I am very happy to say that I am no longer considered to be obese. Only 35 pounds to go!
Now that my calves are recovering from the 33 minutes of Wii Fit Hula Hoop and Running that I did on Saturday, maybe I can get in another Wii workout tomorrow.
Until next time,
Lorelei
