Secondary Drowning

I heard about this story on the radio a couple of days ago, and just read this article on the Today Show website.

“According to the Centers for Disease Control, some 3,600 people drowned in 2005, the most recent year for which there are statistics. Some 10 to 15 percent of those deaths was classified as “dry drowning,” which can occur up to 24 hours after a small amount of water gets into the lungs. In children, that can happen during a bath.”

I was telling a friend of mine about this and she hadn’t heard of secondary drowning or of this story yet, so if you read this, please share this with others.   Not to be paranoid, but it’s good to be vigilant and aware.

Until next time,

Lorelei

  1. Lorelei, that’s frightening. But good to be aware, as you said; something to add to the long list of worries we have as parents…
